Certificate in Communicative English (Elementary Level)

Course Description

The aim of this course is to help students communicate effectively and confidently in English by developing the students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Elementary level builds on the foundations for accurate and fluent communication already established in Beginner level by extending grammatical and functional skills.

At the end of the course, students will be able to focus on applied grammar, listening, oral fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary development, and writing structure, beginning with sentences and progressing through to organised paragraphs.

Course Objectives

At the end of the programme, the student will be able to:

• Speak and listen to explore, elucidate, and contemplate on their thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences at the elementary level
• Communicate information and ideas effectively and clearly, and to respond personally and critically
• Express themselves in speech using a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures
• Read and respond with understanding to a range of visual texts at the elementary level
• Interpret, select, and combine information using a variety of strategies and resources
• Write to explore, and reflect on their thoughts, feelings and experiences
• Use a range of strategies to develop effective writing

Course Modules

Listening and Speaking (Elementary Level)
Listening and Speaking is intended for students taking the course Certificate in Communicative English – Elementary Level. The module is aimed at international students who are not native speakers of English and with a non¬English medium background who wish to enhance their listening and speaking skills in order to maximise their communicative competence in everyday life.

Reading and Writing (Elementary Level)
Reading and Writing is intended for students taking the course Certificate in
Communicative English – Elementary Level. The module is aimed at international students who are not native speakers of English and with a non¬English medium background who wish to enhance their reading and writing skills in order to maximise their communicative competence in everyday life.

Certificate Conferring Body

Upon completion of the course, students will be awarded the Certificate in Communicative English (Elementary Level) Certificate by Mirror D’ International College.

Entry Requirements

• Academic Level: Beginner Level or equivalent
• Language Proficiency: English Beginner Level or equivalent
• Students should be of a minimum of 15 years of age to be eligible for the course.

Before starting the course, new students will sit for a Proficiency Assessment Test to determine their entry level.

Graduation Requirement

Candidates should obtain at least 50% for each of the two modules to be awarded a pass certificate in Communicative English for the respective level.

Manner of Assessment

• Class Participation: 10%
• Project / Assignments: 20%
• Written /Oral examination: 70%

• Exam Fees – S$300 (Optional)~
• Course Material Fees – S$300 (Non­-refundable)^

*The payment of Course Fees are to be made upon commencement of the first day of course.

~ Exam Fees payment is to be made upon commencement of the first day of course and applies only to students that wants to sit for the Internal examinations.

^ Payment of Course Material Fees is to be made upon commencement of the first day of course.

Fees paid include complimentary Uniform, Fee Protection Scheme and Medical Insurance.

Payment Schedule

• 1st Payment ­ S$2000
• 2nd Payment ­ S$2000

The first payment of Course Fees are to be made upon commencement of the first day of course and the subsequent payment of Course Fees are to be made 1 week before scheduled instalment due date stated in the Student Contract.

Instalment payment schedule is not applicable to student pass holders.
